North Sulawesi - The Heart of the Coral Triangle
The Spice Islands were aptly named by 16th century European colonial traders as rare spices were found nowhere else on Earth. With the exception of the local knowledge of its indigenous people, attempts to understand the aquatic environment in the Spice Islands were mostly ignored. It was not until recently that we have defined an aquatic boundary which encompasses this unique underwater realm, aptly named, the Coral Triangle. We now begin to recognize, describe and protect the phenomenal abundance and unparalleled diversity of marine life and coral reef species in areas such as North Sulawesi. Here we find Manado, Bangka Island and Lembeh, remote diving outposts in the Indonesian Archipelago and true diamonds in the heart of the Coral Triangle.
